Steel for anchor chains needs to be high-performance, green steel plates that meet the new standards set by the shipbuilding industry. Taking high-strength steels used in large bulk carriers, container ships, oil tankers, and offshore engineering vessels as an example, currently, the proportion of high-strength plates (A32–A36) used in bulk carriers and container ships exceeds 60%, while the proportion used in oil tankers is around 30%. Now, do you know how to maintain anchor chains? Let’s discuss this topic together today. Maintenance of anchor chain links: 1. The tension of the anchor chain links should be appropriate—too tight increases power consumption and accelerates bearing wear; too loose can cause the chain to jump and even come off its track. 2. If the anchor chain becomes excessively long or has been used for a period of time...
Steel for anchor chains needs to be high-performance, green steel plates that meet the new standards set by the shipbuilding industry. Taking high-strength steels used in large bulk carriers, container ships, oil tankers, and offshore engineering vessels as an example, currently over 60% of bulk carriers and container ships utilize high-strength plates (A32–A36), while oil tankers employ high-strength plates at a rate of about 30%. Now, do you know how to maintain anchor chains? Let’s discuss this topic together today.
Maintenance of anchor chain and link chains:
1. The tension of the anchor chain and link chain should be appropriate: if too tight, it will increase power consumption and cause premature bearing wear; if too loose, the chain is prone to jumping and slipping off the sprocket.
2. If the anchor chain or link chain is too long or has stretched after use, making it difficult to adjust, you can remove chain links as needed—provided that the number of removed links is even. The chain links should be passed through from the back side of the chain, with the locking plate inserted on the outside. The opening of the locking plate should face in the direction opposite to the rotation.
3. After the anchor chain links show severe wear, both the new sprocket and the new chain should be replaced simultaneously to ensure proper meshing. It is not permissible to replace only the new chain or only the new sprocket.
4. Old chains from anchor chains must not be mixed with new chain sections; otherwise, impact may easily occur during transmission, leading to chain breakage.
The above are several aspects of anchor chain maintenance and precautions. We hope that all users will pay close attention to them.
